A Couple’s Argument

“Are you sure it should be that color?”

“Sure, honey, this is what we chose from the color samples the HOA gave us.  It’s ‘Terra Cotta Sunrise’.”

“I know what it’s supposed to be, but does the color on that house look like terra cotta to you?  Terra cotta is the color of a flowerpot, not the color of raw salmon.”

“I don’t think it looks…”

“Oh, you don’t?  Are you looking at the same pink nightmare that I am?  I have a better name for this color: ‘Flamingo In Flagrante’.”

“You liked the sample we tested on the side of the house.”

“That was obviously a huge mistake.  I can’t live with that color.  The whole house has to be repainted.”

“Hon, we just moved in!  We can’t afford to get the place painted again!”

“It’s either repaint it or be the first gay couple in history to be outed by Sherwin-Williams.”

————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Well, this is the result of the first writing challenge I’ve accepted.  My thanks to the girl in the glasses at blogdramedy for pointing me in the direction of these ‘100 Word Challenges for Grown Ups’, which are generated at another blog, Julia’s Place.  Julia gives a prompt of a few words, and you have 100 words to make a short story from there.  I picked a prompt from deep in the archives at her site, and 150 words were given to me, plus the prompt (‘Are you sure it should be that color?’) to finish a story.  I came in four words under budget, so to speak, at 154.  I don’t think it’s too bad for a first-timer.

I would be remiss if I didn’t include a story that my husband wrote on the fly.  I sent him what I was writing for some feedback, and he sent back this:

“Are you sure it should be that color?”

“It’s not the color that worries me, it’s the size and odor.”

“Either way, you need to get that checked out immediately.”

“I’m too embarrassed to show it to anyone else.”

“There’s no shame.  We can’t all be experts in the art of picking the perfect kiwi.”

Now, that has a lot less words than mine, and it may be funnier, too.  I’m not too proud to admit that.

    • Sherwin-Williams is a popular brand of paint- they have their own stores. Thanks for the compliment! I love your Gravatar, by the way – blue is my favorite color, rapidly followed by green to compliment it.
